How do I treat a lingering cough?

By Richard Warshell, MD ·

A cough that lingers after an illness is a common concern. Simple remedies help: cough lozenges, hot tea, honey, and raising the head of your bed at night. Over-the-counter options include dextromethorphan, guaifenesin, Sudafed, and nasal steroids. Benzonatate, a prescription medication, is another option.
